What I'm reading in this month of love

I'm excited over my reading list for February, even though I'm the last person you'd expect to read a hardcore romantic novel. I can barely count with one hand all the love stories that I actually enjoyed. Well, top of mind are Erich Segal's Love Story and Jose Saramago's Baltasar and Blimunda.

Now I don't usually post monthly reading plans, but indulge me on this one, dear reader. For February, I've selected 5 books whose themes rely heavily on love or romance. They may not be romantically sappy, but they're perfect for the month of love, I think.

Henry Fielding's Tom Jones has always been part of my to-be-read pile. It's a doorstop, so I guess I'll read a few chapters at a time. Mary Stewart's The Ivy Tree is romantic suspense. Rachel Cohn and David Levithan's Dash & Lily's Book of Dares is young adult romance.

I don't know what to expect with Jorge Amado's Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands though. Same with Tony Perez's Cubao Midnight Express, which is the book club's selection for the month. Hopefully, these two books will be a pleasant surprise.

How about you, dear reader? What books are you reading for the month of love?

Among others, I'm reading Perdido Street Station! Haha. Not exactly thematic for February - well, not for humans, right? Hehehe. :)

Impressive. I have never, that I can recall, set out to read a romance novel, classic or the modern fluff, but I have been surprised by some good ones, when I don't realize that there's a well-handled romance in the raw adventure or genre piece I've picked out. That's always an element that adds depth to a story. The latest example I've read is T.E. MacArthur's The Volcano Lady. It's a long time coming, and not central to the plot, but it seems to complete the story somehow.

Best of luck with this month's program. Think you'll find time to tell us how it went?

I've been planning to read Dash & Lily's Book of Dares for the longest time but I don't know why I still don't give time for it. Seeing this book on your list reminded me again but I also have Perdido Street Station this February (read-along with Monique, et al). I'll watch out for your review na lang in the meantime. :)

What an interesting way to plan one's reading. I'm currently reading The Stranger by Camus, not much in the love/romance department. I did however recently finished a couple of Romance Novels for Book Riot's read harder challenge. I was new in the genre and found that while still fluff, some are interesting enough and not downright cringe-worthy.
I'm a Levithan reader, Dash and Lily was a fun concept and quite an easy read.

Hi, literarydumpsite! I love Levithan! I'm sure I'll read Dash & Lily in one lazy afternoon.
